Xuan uses my method to read 2-digit numbers

It is always a joy to teach Xuan. You will see him practicing what you teach him. As he tends to read number from right to left, e.g. reading 24 as 42, I have taught him to cover up the right digit to read out the tens, then move away the finger to read out the ones. Tonight, he first surprised me by taking the initiative to read out the page numbers of a book and next surprised me by using the above method that I taught him when reading the numbers.

Tonight, I was trying to read the new elephant book to him. Xuan surprised me by pointing to the page number 24 and reading it out correctly. He was in the mood and continued reading out the page numbers all the way up to 47 by himself. When he read, he used one finger to cover up the right number to read out the number. For example, for 24, he will cover up 4 and read 2 as twenty, then moved away his finger to see 4 and read out “4”. And he used this method for all page numbers that he read.

I am happy that Xuan is now keen in reading out 2-digit numbers when he sees one. In fact, on 9 Nov 2011, he also took his initiative to try to read the price ($55.75) when he saw the price tag of the milk powder in NTUC supermarket. I hope that he can read any 2-digit number correctly in no time.

Starting from 13 Oct 2011, I have been teaching Xuan reading of 2-digit numbers without a number chart almost daily using cute pictures and he is beginning to lose interest in these cute pictures. His new interest in reading out numbers on his own will save me a lot of time in preparing new teaching tools.
