It is difficult to get Yu to do thing if he is not motivated. When he asks to read books, it is not because he is interested in reading, but because he wants to play games. And he often goes downstairs to play with neighbours at evening time. After playing downstairs and back at home after 7pm, he still does not study and when asked to read books or do Math worksheet, he will find excuse, like wanting to eat bread. Recently, the excuse includes doing drawings for his Sabah cousins.
To me, the time that he spends on study is too little. In thinking hard of how to get him to pass time meaningfully, I suddenly thought of getting him to come up with Math teaching ideas and tools. I need these for my Math website and I hope that he can inspire me with new ideas. I also hope that this will cultivate his interest for Math.
Yu loves money and pays attention to things related to money. For example, he asked me to buy "Treasures of the earth" magazine and kept the "gem" in his personal space. He also collected sea shells with the aim of selling it.
To educate Yu that ideas can sell, I told him that I will pay him $2 for coming out with ideas to teach Xuan Math. He immediately asked for paper and Angry Bird stickers and started his work. He was willing to sit still, focused and finished his work. Here is the counting chart that he had come up with:

I noted that Yu is not very creative as he tends to arrange things in a systematic way, like me :p. In this work, he arranged the stickers row by row. The text "1 to 6" in the box means this is the chart for numbers 1 to 6.
And here is how to teach using the number chart: Cover up the number in the box and let Xuan count the angry birds. After Xuan finishes counting, reveal the answer to see if the answer is correct.
Let's see whether Yu will continue to come up with more Math tools on his own will to earn extra money, which I think he will.
